San Diego County Tennis Umpires
About Us
"The proper role of a tennis official is to ensure that any given tennis
match is conducted under the fairest possible conditions. Tennis umpires should
serve out of love for the game of tennis and a keen interest in seeing that it
is played under the best possible conditions. Ideally, a tennis official is A FRIEND AT
COURT, helpful to players and spectators. In this role, tennis officials make a
useful contribution to the game." (from USTA, Friend At Court)
- History
San Diego County Tennis Umpires Assocation (SDCTUA) was founded in 1974 for the purpose
of coordinating tennis officiating in San Diego County, and to provide
trained, certified officials for tennis events conducted in San Diego County.
Since it's inception, SDCTUA has also been involved in the recruiting and training new
officials, and providing continuing education and
fellowship for active, retired and associate officials. SDCTUA was
established as non-profit California
corporation and always welcomes new members! - Membership
To join, you must first be a member of the USTA. The USTA
requires umpires to pass a yearly certification exam at a level appropriate for
the work they do. An umpire should be
in good physical condition including excellent eyesight, verified through
professional eye examinations every other year. Active members must work a minumum
number of matches appropriate to their certification level to maintain their
good standing.
To join our local group, annual membership costs $30 and includes access to
assignments, bi-monthly meetings and a newsletter, and a standing invitation to
all Association training and social events. Our bi-monthly meetings
convene on the second Wednesday of odd months at 7:00 PM at the Balboa Tennis
Club at Morley Field in San Diego.
Above all, officiating requires a love of tennis and a desire to give back to
the game; qualified individuals, pleas join us!
